Congratulations to Sherry Benny on winning the Hit 967 Recipe of the Week contest!

This delicacy, Nadan Kozhi Kumbalanga (Chicken with white pumpkin) is typical of people living in Thrissur region of Kerala is indeed delicious. According to Sherry, this recipe has been lost to time. We appreciate this effort to revive this wonderful dish!

Ingredients:
(If you do not find country chicken, you can substitute it with any other chicken type you may find)

 
Chicken – Medium sized pieces
White pumpkin – 300 gms cut into cubes
Onion – 3 (chopped)
Turmeric powder- A pinch
Ginger – One big piece (chopped)
Garlic – 5 pods (chopped)
Green chilies – 1 or 2 (slit)
Tomatoes – 1 (chopped)
Curry leaves- one hand full
Garam masala powder- 1-2 tsp
Red chili powder- 1-2 tsp
Coriander powder- 2tbs
Turmeric powder- 2tsp
Curd- 1/4 cup
Salt – to taste
Pepper powder – 1 tsp
Coconut oil – to sauté
Coconut milk – as required
Grated coconut – 3 tbs (roast it golden brown and powder it and keep it aside)
Small onions – chopped
 
 
Method

1. Marinate chicken pieces with chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt, coconut oil (few drops) and curd.
2. Heat oil in a pan. Sauté onions, ginger, garlic, green chilies till golden.
3. Add garam masala, followed by chopped tomatoes and curry leaves.
4. Sauté till oil starts appearing on the sides.
5. Add marinated chicken and coconut milk.
6. Bring to a boil on slow fire.
7. Add the pumpkin pieces. Cook well.
8. Add the browned, powdered coconut.
9. Heat a little oil in another vessel. Fry the small onions and curry leaves nd add this to the chicken curry.
10. Serve with rice or chappatti.
