Delhi has closed six metro stations on Monday and imposed traffic restrictions as opposition parties plan a march to the Supreme Court over a controversial revision of voter lists.
Authorities warned of traffic disruption, as opposition parties planned a march to the Supreme Court over a controversial revision of voter lists.
The revision has sparked days of unrest in the Indian capital.
Opposition parties and supporters of the “Cockroach” youth movement have protested almost daily this month. They are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a revision that critics say benefits Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
More than 130 million names have been removed from voter lists since the revision began last year, including people who have died, moved or could not be traced.
Police detained thousands of protesters over the weekend, including leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), as security forces locked down central Delhi.
The Election Commission denies favouring any party and says voters who were wrongly removed can re-enrol.
The main opposition Congress party announced a march to the Supreme Court to demand an end to what it calls “vote theft” and Kumar’s resignation.
“Youth, all opposition parties, civil society groups, all those who believe in democracy and stand by the Constitution of India, will walk with us,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on X.
Chief Justice Surya Kant declined to meet the delegation, according to a Congress source. He said the issue was already before the court and should be dealt with through legal proceedings.
The CJP says it will meet Delhi Police to demand a date for a peaceful protest, and has threatened to call a new protest if one isn’t given within 24 hours.
