A new major project to upgrade Al Wasl Road is expected to reduce travel time by 50 per cent- adding new tunnels, lanes, and intersections, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Tuesday.
The project will see the addition of a new lane, widening the road to a total of three lanes, and the construction of five two-lane tunnels spanning a total of 3,850 metres.
Al Wasl Road is set to be extended from its intersection with Umm Suqeim Street to its junction with 2nd December Street, covering a total of 15 km. Six key intersections are also due for an update under the new project- with Umm Amara Street, Umm Al Sherif Street, Al Manara Street, Al Thanya Street, Al Safa Street, and Al Arouba Street.
H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of executive Directors at RTA, said the area "serves a vital district that accommodates more than one million residents and features an array of modern destinations, including beaches, luxury hotels, fine dining venues, and upscale residential communities,"
The project is expected to reduce travel time along Al Wasl Road by 50 per cent and increase its capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Al Satwa roundabout will be converted to a signalised junction.
"Creative and aesthetic" enhancement like pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycling tracks, boulevards, and vibrant urban spaces to enrich the area's environment will also be added.
