As many as 91 cases of social media abuse were recorded in Sharjah in 2022.
That's according to Colonel Omar Ahmed Abu Al-Zawd, Director of the Criminal Investigations and Investigation Department at Sharjah Police, 85 cases were termed "insults" and six as "defamation".
According to the UAE law, those caught using social media to defame, insult or abuse others shall be punished by imprisonment and a fine of no less than AED 250,000 and not more than AED 500,000.
Col. Ahmed added that the Sharjah Police use sophisticated tools to monitor social media abuse, and urged the public to be mindful when using it.
