Travel between Sharjah and Dubai is set to become smoother with the opening of the first phase of a major road development project designed to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

It was inaugurated on Wednesday by His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The first phase includes the partial opening of Al Taawun Interchange and the operation of several bridges and junctions, allowing one-way traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Expo Centre Sharjah to facilitate access for visitors to the Sharjah International Book Fair.

Dr. Salah bin Butti Al Muhairi, Chairman of the Initiatives Implementation Authority, Mubadara, said the first phase is part of a wider project designed to increase road capacity and improve connectivity across key routes.

The second phase will include the full opening of the upper-level junction at Al Taawun Roundabout and Al Taawun Tunnel, as well as the completion of bridges and junctions along three industrial streets.

It will also include the development of Al Khulafa Al Rashideen Interchange and the bridge connecting it to Jamal Abdul Nasser Street.

Eng. Yousef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, said the project reflects the Ruler's vision of developing integrated infrastructure that supports the emirate's continued growth and improves residents' quality of life.

He also praised the cooperation between local and federal authorities, saying work is continuing to complete the remaining phases to the highest standards of safety, quality and sustainability.

Once fully operational, the development is expected to significantly improve connections between residential, commercial and industrial areas, while providing smoother journeys between the two emirates.
