UAE hails WHO resolution condemning attacks on civilians, health infrastructure

The UAE has welcomed the adoption of a new World Health Assembly resolution condemning attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including healthcare facilities.

The resolution, submitted by Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan, highlights the humanitarian and public health impact of attacks targeting civilians, hospitals, energy facilities, airports, ports and water plants.

It also strongly condemns attacks by Iran against GCC countries and Jordan, which the resolution says caused civilian deaths and injuries, including among children, and damaged key infrastructure needed for healthcare and essential services.

In a statement to the assembly, Jamal Al Musharakh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN and Other International Organisations in Geneva, stressed that protecting civilians and healthcare systems is a fundamental responsibility under international law and vital for regional and global public health.

The statement noted that the Iranian attacks included more than 3,000 missile and drone strikes carried out against the UAE alone.

It further referred to the drone attack launched from Iraqi territory targeting the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, which struck an electricity generator outside the inner perimeter of the plant, describing it as a direct violation of international law.

The UAE also warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz threaten supply routes for medicines, vaccines, food and fuel across the region.

Officials say the resolution aims to strengthen international monitoring and reporting on the public health impact of such attacks, including their effects on mental health and access to essential medical supplies.
