A second convoy of Emirati military vehicles manned by pro-government fighters arrived in Taiz yesterday to bolster the effort to drive out Houthi rebel forces from the province. The new consignment of UAE vehicles was sent from Aden, a day after the spokesman of the Saudi-led coalition, Brigadier General Ahmed Al Asiri, said its focus now was the liberation of Taiz. The coalition forces were further strengthened by the arrival of a new contingent of Sudanese troops who arrived in Aden early on Monday morning. The Saudi-led coalition, in which the UAE plays a critical role, is seeking to restore Yemen’s internationally recognised government after Houthi rebels supported by deposed president Ali Abdullah Saleh overran the capital. The situation in Taiz is particularly dire and organisations based in the province have confirmed that it is on the brink of humanitarian disaster as a result of the ongoing conflict.
