Coco Gauff survives first round scare at US Open

Coco Gauff came from behind to defeat German qualifier Laura Siegemund in the first round of the US Open.

The American eventually won the match in New York 3-6 6-2 6-4 having been outplayed in the first set. 

19-year-old Gauff is among the favourites to challenge Polish top seed Iga Swiatek at the final major of the year. 

The defending champion showed no mercy in seeing off Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson with a convincing 6-0 6-1 victory in her opening match. 

Elsewhere in the tournament 8th seed Maria Sakkari was beaten by world number 71 Rebeka Masarova in a 6-4 6-4 upset.
