Dubai Customs have seized 35 million tramadol pills, and 2.5 tons of the powdered form of the drug, in one of the largest seizures of controlled medicines in 2015. The drugs were found at Jebel Ali Port on a shipment which had been sent from an Asian country. The powder was found packed in plastic bags inside 100 barrels, while the pills had been concealed in 140 cartons. The drugs were detected using Dubai Custom's Risk Engine system, which identifies suspicious cargo with a high level of accuracy. Tramadol is a controlled substance and a permit from the Ministry of Health is mandatory before importing it.
