UAE boosts clean energy ambitions

The UAE is raising its clean energy target to 35 per cent by 2030-2031, covering both nuclear and renewable energy.

That's according to Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the Middle East Energy exhibition in Dubai.

He said reaching the target will require new projects, greater competition and more private-sector participation in power generation.

The minister added that the UAE continues to monitor and update its energy strategy as technology advances and costs fall.

Al Mazrouei said the country is also expanding power grids and developing new plants to improve efficiency, reduce losses and keep electricity prices competitive.

He highlighted the rapid progress in energy storage, saying batteries can now store electricity for up to 24 hours at competitive prices. That compares with just two to three hours in the past.

These advances are helping solar power provide electricity around the clock, making it increasingly competitive with natural gas and nuclear power, while producing no carbon dioxide emissions.

Looking ahead, the minister said the UAE will focus on expanding cleaner energy sources, strengthening electricity links between countries, improving transmission networks and reducing losses.

Middle East Energy 2026, which runs until September 3 at Dubai World Trade Centre, brings together around 1,500 exhibitors from 70 countries.

Al Mazrouei said the event provides an opportunity to showcase new technologies, exchange expertise and highlight the UAE’s energy strategies and regulatory framework.
