The Emirates Drug Establishment has approved a new treatment for two serious lung conditions, marking another step in expanding access to advanced medicines in the UAE.
The approved drug, Jascayd (nerandomilast) is used to treat Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and Progressive Pulmonary Fibrosis in adults. Both conditions cause gradual scarring of the lungs and worsening breathing difficulties.
The treatment works by selectively inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE4B), helping to slow the decline in lung function.
According to the regulator, approval followed a full scientific review of the drug’s quality, safety and effectiveness, supported by clinical trial data showing it can reduce the rate of lung function decline in patients.
With this decision, the UAE becomes the first country in the region and the third globally, after the United States and China, to approve the therapy.
The Emirates Drug Establishment said the move reflects the strength of the UAE’s regulatory system and its ability to fast-track innovative treatments while maintaining international scientific standards.
It also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and ongoing monitoring for patients with chronic lung disease to improve outcomes and quality of life.
